Romans 4:1What then shall we say that Abraham, our forefather, has discovered?
Romans 4:11And he received the sign of circumcision as a seal of the righteousness that he had by faith while he was still uncircumcised. So then, he is the father of all who believe but are not circumcised, in order that righteousness might be credited to them.
Romans 4:12And he is also the father of the circumcised who not only are circumcised, but who also walk in the footsteps of the faith that our father Abraham had before he was circumcised.
Romans 4:13For the promise to Abraham and his offspring that he would be heir of the world was not given through the law, but through the righteousness that comes by faith.
Romans 4:14For if those who live by the law are heirs, faith is useless and the promise is worthless,
Romans 4:15because the law brings wrath. And where there is no law, there is no transgression.
Romans 4:16Therefore, the promise comes by faith, so that it may rest on grace and may be guaranteed to all Abraham’s offspring—not only to those who are of the law, but also to those who are of the faith of Abraham. He is the father of us all.
Romans 9:7Nor because they are Abraham’s descendants are they all his children. On the contrary, “Through Isaac your offspring will be reckoned.”
Romans 9:8So it is not the children of the flesh who are God’s children, but it is the children of the promise who are regarded as offspring.
Galatians 4:22For it is written that Abraham had two sons, one by the slave woman and the other by the free woman.
Galatians 4:23His son by the slave woman was born according to the flesh, but his son by the free woman was born through the promise.
Galatians 4:24These things serve as illustrations, for the women represent two covenants. One covenant is from Mount Sinai and bears children into slavery: This is Hagar.
Galatians 4:25Now Hagar stands for Mount Sinai in Arabia and corresponds to the present-day Jerusalem, because she is in slavery with her children.
Galatians 4:26But the Jerusalem above is free, and she is our mother.
Galatians 4:27For it is written: “Rejoice, O barren woman, who bears no children; break forth and cry aloud, you who have never travailed; because more are the children of the desolate woman than of her who has a husband.”
Galatians 4:28Now you, brothers, like Isaac, are children of promise.
Galatians 4:29At that time, however, the son born by the flesh persecuted the son born by the Spirit. It is the same now.
Galatians 4:30But what does the Scripture say? “Expel the slave woman and her son, for the slave woman’s son will never share in the inheritance with the free woman’s son.”
Galatians 4:31Therefore, brothers, we are not children of the slave woman, but of the free woman.
