Words & lexicons
Find the Greek and Hebrew words behind an English translation. Read definitions from STEPBible, Dodson and Strong’s, then follow each word through Scripture.
How Strong’s numbers work
James Strong assigned numbers to the Hebrew and Greek words in his concordance. The letter tells you the language: H for Hebrew and Aramaic, G for Greek. G26 identifies ἀγάπη, agapē, “love.” H2617 identifies חֵסֶד , chesed, often translated “loving devotion” or “mercy.”
A number helps you find a dictionary entry and related passages. Read the sentence around the word to understand its meaning there. Translators can use several English expressions for one original word, and one English word can represent several Greek or Hebrew words.
Follow a word through the Bible
Start with a number, an English word or a dictionary form. Each word page has its source definitions, the books where it occurs, BSB and KJV rendering counts, and passages in groups of fifty. The counts name the text edition so you can compare them with another concordance.
STEP extends some numbers with letters to distinguish meanings or people. We group those entries under the base Strong’s number and preserve each source identifier beside its definition.
