Read word by wordThen Samuel said to all Israel, “I have listened to your voice in all that you have said to me, and I have set over you a king.
Read word by wordNow here is the king walking before you, and I am old and gray, and my sons are here with you. I have walked before you from my youth until this day.
Read word by wordHere I am. Bear witness against me before the LORD and before His anointed: Whose ox or donkey have I taken? Whom have I cheated or oppressed? From whose hand have I accepted a bribe and closed my eyes? Tell me, and I will restore it to you.”
Read word by wordNow present yourselves, so that I may confront you before the LORD with all the righteous acts He has done for you and your fathers.
Read word by wordBut when you saw that Nahash king of the Ammonites was moving against you, you said to me, ‘No, we must have a king to rule over us’—even though the LORD your God was your king.
Read word by wordNow, therefore, present yourselves and see this great thing that the LORD will do before your eyes.

Read word by wordThen Jonathan attacked the Philistine outpost at Geba, and the Philistines heard about it. So Saul blew the ram’s horn throughout the land, saying, “Let the Hebrews hear!”
Read word by wordAnd all Israel heard the news: “Saul has attacked an outpost of the Philistines, and now Israel has become a stench to the Philistines!” Then the people were summoned to join Saul at Gilgal.
Read word by wordNow the Philistines assembled to fight against Israel with three thousand chariots, six thousand horsemen, and troops as numerous as the sand on the seashore. They went up and camped at Michmash, east of Beth-aven.
Read word by wordSeeing that they were in danger because their troops were hard-pressed, the men of Israel hid in caves and thickets, among the rocks, and in cellars and cisterns.
Read word by wordAnd Saul waited seven days for the time appointed by Samuel, but Samuel did not come to Gilgal, and the troops began to desert Saul.

Read word by wordSo on the day of battle not a sword or spear could be found in the hands of the troops with Saul and Jonathan; only Saul and his son Jonathan had weapons.
Read word by wordOne day Jonathan son of Saul said to the young man bearing his armor, “Come, let us cross over to the Philistine outpost on the other side.” But Jonathan did not tell his father.
Read word by wordNow there were cliffs on both sides of the pass that Jonathan intended to cross to reach the Philistine outpost. One was named Bozez and the other Seneh.
Read word by wordJonathan said to the young man bearing his armor, “Come, let us cross over to the outpost of these uncircumcised men. Perhaps the LORD will work on our behalf. Nothing can hinder the LORD from saving, whether by many or by few.”
Read word by wordHis armor-bearer replied, “Do all that is in your heart. Go ahead; I am with you heart and soul.”
Read word by wordBut if they say, ‘Come on up,’ then we will go up, because this will be our sign that the LORD has delivered them into our hands.”
